Standard 1: Middle level teachers understand the major concepts, theories, and research related to young adolescent development, and they provide opportunities that support student development and learning.

Note: It may be difficult to find me, but I am the woman holding the folders in the photograph.

A teacher's role as an educator cannot be undermined. We are responsible for providing instruction in areas that students will need to know as they continue their education, as well as in their daily life. Every child's learning must be carefully monitored, and we must ensure that children understand rather than merely memorize the curriculum.

Nevertheless, a teacher's role outside of the classroom is also invaluable to her students. My students know that they can talk to me about much more than just Social Studies. I chat with my students about popular culture and have also been a shoulder to cry on when there was a family or relationship matter that was particularly upsetting. Children confide in me and I try to offer whatever useful advice I think best--particularly in the areas I believe will make the students the happiest and most successful.

Additionally, I am responsible for more than just teaching at South Davie. I run the spirit club, the "South Davie Crazies" who cheer from the crowd at home football and basketball games. (The pass I designed for the students to get admittance to the games can be found below.) I also served as a dance coach for the musical theater production of Guys and Dolls, organized the hospital trip I mention in other sections of this website and is pictured above, and serve as the teacher liaison for the 8th grade semi-formal at the end of the year. Thus, I am there for the children in terms of their social and emotional development.
