Standard 2: Middle level Social Studies teachers connect Social Studies with the broad curriculum.
The students are frequently given the opportunity to combine the arts within their study of the Social Studies content. Each quarter, my students must create or act out skits according to the relevant material. The image above occurred when the students wrote and designed mini-plays based on the Intolerable Acts that led to the American Revolution. We also try to read classic literary works as plays whenever possible. Uncle Tom's Cabin, for example, was a big hit in my classes as the kids enjoyed reading one of the catalysts to the Civil War.
Beyond the Arts and Literacy, Social Studies content can include mathematic concepts, such as growing populations, as well as scientific ones, such as the diseases that impacted societies.
